Now with your own garden journal, which I am so excited to share with you in these free garden planners, you can have your own planting schedule in which you can take what you learned from your garden last year and incorporate it into your garden plan for this next year.

You can use this free gardening journal to track important things like when your seeds should be started, when the plants were watered last, and much more. The good news? These downloads are completely free and are a great guide for the next time you start planning your garden.

Plus, you can feel free to pick and choose which pages in this download will work best for you, then implement a gardening journal as you plan and grow your plants this season.

Flower Garden Journal

In a lot of cases, you don’t have to keep a close eye on your flower gardens other than for watering, weeding, and fertilizing schedules. However, if you are starting new flowers, especially annuals from seed packets, then these gardening journal templates might come in handy for your flower garden as well.

If you are like me, it’s fun to dabble in different types of flowers to grow each season. Each spring I look forward to planting and growing all kinds of different flowers, so having a planning guide is helpful, especially when trying something new.

This free journal template is extremely valuable for vegetable gardening as well. There are so many different varieties and important things to remember during the growing season for your vegetable garden. It’s very helpful to have a planner to walk you through each step of the process.

Determining your budget and selecting plant varieties that are right for you to grow in the space you have available are important things to plan out and keep track of as you walk through the season with your vegetable garden so that you know exactly what your best options are.

Garden Binder

You are welcome to pick and choose from the list above to determine which pages will work best for you. I recommend that as you determine which pages should be added to your gardening journal you print them out and add them into a 3-ring binder for easy tracking.

This journal can serve as one of the powerful tools to help your garden be a success this planting season. One of the great uses for it is to help track each plant life cycle in your garden. This way you can determine when to start the seeds, or when it is the appropriate time to plant the plants outside, and you have hot days for the plants to thrive.

Specific Pages

Although you can arrange your journal in any order that you prefer, I would recommend that after the cover page, your first page might be your year at a glance.

You can use the year at a glance to help plan your garden in general. You will want to have a general idea of what kinds of plants you will want to grow during the year, and how much you have budgeted for new seeds.

You can then reference the seed packages for the appropriate planting date by your specific location. Some seed packages will recommend that you start them indoors during the late winter months, then transplant them outdoors when both the ground and air temperatures are warm enough.

The seed packages will also give you an estimate of the seed germination for each plant. Seed germination is essentially how long it takes the seeds to sprout into little plants.

Pest control is another thing you will likely want to use the gardening journal to track. You will want to be careful how often the plants are treated. Plus, it’s always a great idea to keep track of things you encountered with your garden this year, and what you did that helped track it, so that next year you can have a reference point.

Specific Page Highlights

Below I am going to outline a few of my favorite pages, and ones that are likely important and useful for everyone with a garden. Let’s start with the budget.

Gardening Budget

Knowing what your garden budget is and keeping track of the money you have spent on items is very important. Depending on what you need for your garden, and what types of gardens you are planning, there are several different types of costs that might be involved.

For instance, if you are planning a vegetable garden, then you will likely need to buy seeds. Then if you are starting seeds inside, you will need to have some kind of planter, and potting soil to get the seeds started.

Next, there is the cost of fertilizer and pest control for later in the growing season that you will want to be sure to account for. This is why it is important to know what your gardening budget is, and have a way to keep track of expenses.

Plot Plan: Garden Plan Grid

Planning the layout of your garden is another page that is included in this journal. This page is another one of my personal favorites because you get to dream about your beautiful plants, even if it is still the dead of winter.

Planning where your different varieties of plants should be placed is another important aspect of planning your garden because there are types of plants that should not be grown next to each other. This could be because of cross-pollination, or because one will overtake the other, especially if vine plants don’t have enough space to expand.

Seed Inventory

Knowing what seeds you have collected during the winter months is another important page in the gardening journal. This page lets you keep track of the seeds you have purchased, and when they should be started.

Seed Packet Info: Plant Card

Plant cards are helpful to keep track of each type of plant you are growing. I have often wondered about a plant’s care, long after the seeds have been sown, and the packages discarded. These sheets let you copy all the important information from the seed packets so that you can reference them at a later date.

Planting Planner

This planting planner will help you keep track of when different seeds should be started, no matter if they need to be started in the house, then transplanted later, or simply planted later.

You can keep track of each seed variety with this planner, that way you can sow them at the correct time for the specific plant and for your location.

Weekly and Monthly Garden Planner Tasks

After the seeds are planted, the gardening tasks have just begun. These garden planners help you to keep track of all the tasks you have done, and when they should be completed again. This will help to keep your garden plants happy and healthy throughout the growing season.

Garden Planning

Using a journal to assist in your garden planning is a great idea. With the journal you can use it to map out your garden layout for the season, which can be a valuable tool, so that you have plenty of room for all of the plants, and they are laid out so that the plants growing near each other will not overtake one another or cross-pollinate.

Seed Starting

This gardening journal is especially useful to plan your seed-starting schedule. Several seeds, such as tomato plants or green peppers need to be started indoors during the late winter months to help them get a good start.

This tool is a great way to keep track of your planting schedule and even transplanting schedule. It lets you take quick notes that will be helpful for next season’s garden as well.

Cultivating your own gardening skills and expanding your knowledge makes for a wonderful way to grow your own food, and also pass down the knowledge that you have obtained to the next generation. That way, they too can learn from you and enjoy working in the garden as well.

Succession Planting

At the end of the season, there are some seeds that may need to be harvested and stored to plant next year. There are even some plants that need to be planted in the fall rather than the spring, depending on your location. Or you simply might want to map out your garden plan for the following growing season.

No matter what your gardening goals are, keeping a journal will help with all of your gardening processes.
