Before we get to the free download, let’s look at a little bit of background on this specific Psalm, in case you are not very familiar with the Bible verses.
A Psalm of David
This specific song, like many other passages of scripture in the book of Psalms, is written by David. David was the king of Israel, following the reign of Saul. David was known as a great ruler, but he also liked to write music, expressing all of his inner thoughts, feelings, and even turmoil.
David was chosen to be the next king of Israel at a young age; however, he spent a lot of his life, on the run just to survive. For much of David’s life, King Saul chased after him, trying to kill David, because he knew that David was to be the next king, chosen by God, to succeed him.
Eventually, God’s promises to David would come true, and he did take the throne in Judah, many years later, after being anointed.
David was not a perfect king to reign over Israel, but even though he was not perfect, and made many mistakes, he is still known as a man after God’s own heart.
A Beautiful Reminder
In Psalm 139, we see David pouring out his heart. This chapter is also a great reminder of three important truths of God, that David expresses. Those three things are God’s omniscience, God’s presence, and God’s creation.
God’s Omniscience in Psalm 139
First, let’s explain what omniscience means. Omniscience is simply a big word that means the state of knowing everything. (source) David expresses his belief that God knows everything about him in verses one through six of chapter 139.
Search me and know me…
This chapter starts out with David expressing how God has searched him and knows him. David goes on to say that God knows everything about him even when he sits, rises, and knows his thoughts.
Then David goes on to express how the knowledge is too wonderful for him to attain. However, this is so far beyond his comprehension, how God can know everything about him.
1 You have searched me, Lord,
and you know me.
2 You know when I sit and when I rise;
you perceive my thoughts from afar.
3 You discern my going out and my lying down;
you are familiar with all my ways.
4 Before a word is on my tongue
you, Lord, know it completely.
5 You hem me in behind and before,
and you lay your hand upon me.
6 Such knowledge is too wonderful for me,
too lofty for me to attain.
God’s Presence in Psalm 139
In verses seven through twelve of Psalm 139, David transitions his thoughts to God’s presence. In these verses, he focuses on God being with him, no matter where he is.
Where can I go from your Spirit…
David opens with the question of where can I go from your spirit, where can I flee from your presence? It is clear that David believes no matter where he is, location-wise, God’s spirit and presence is always there with him.
Your right hand will hold me fast…
Not only does David believe God’s always present with him, but David also believes that God’s presence is for his benefit. Near the end of these verses, David transitions to expressing that God will be there holding him fast. He ends with “Even the darkness will not be dark to you; the night will shine like the day, for the darkness is as light to you. (vs 12)” It seems that David is expressing that no matter how dark his circumstances in life might be, God is always there to sustain him and hold him up.
7 Where can I go from your Spirit?
Where can I flee from your presence?
8 If I go up to the heavens, you are there;
if I make my bed in the depths, you are there.
9 If I rise on the wings of the dawn,
if I settle on the far side of the sea,
10 even there your hand will guide me,
your right hand will hold me fast.
11 If I say, “Surely the darkness will hide me
and the light become night around me,”
12 even the darkness will not be dark to you;
the night will shine like the day,
for darkness is as light to you.
God’s Creation in Psalm 139
In verses 13 through 18, David takes a turn to express God’s creation, and how David was created.
You created my inmost being…
Not only does David express how he was formed in his mother’s womb, but he expresses God’s hand in the process of his creation. David then goes on to praise God, for how he has been made.
I was made in the secret place…
David not only expresses how God created him but also how each day was ordained to happen before it actually took place. He expresses all of this, as being known before he was even created.
13 For you created my inmost being;
you knit me together in my mother’s womb.
14 I praise you because I am fearfully and wonderfully made;
your works are wonderful,
I know that full well.
15 My frame was not hidden from you
when I was made in the secret place,
when I was woven together in the depths of the earth.
16 Your eyes saw my unformed body;
all the days ordained for me were written in your book
before one of them came to be.
17 How precious to me are your thoughts,[a] God!
How vast is the sum of them!
18 Were I to count them,
they would outnumber the grains of sand—
when I awake, I am still with you.
God’s Rule in Psalm 139
As in many of the songs, in verses 19 through 24 of Psalm 139, David expresses the heat he feels from those around him, both towards David himself and towards God. He expresses how his adversaries have an evil intent towards both David and God, but closes out the chapter, with a few well-known verses.
“Search me, God, and know my heart; test me and know my anxious thoughts. See if there is any offensive way in me and lead me in the way everlasting.” At the end of the chapter, he comes back to God as being his rock and his salvation. Expressing that he wishes to continue living in God’s way, the way everlasting.
19 If only you, God, would slay the wicked!
Away from me, you who are bloodthirsty!
20 They speak of you with evil intent;
your adversaries misuse your name.
21 Do I not hate those who hate you, Lord,
and abhor those who are in rebellion against you?
22 I have nothing but hatred for them;
I count them my enemies.
23 Search me, God, and know my heart;
test me and know my anxious thoughts.
24 See if there is any offensive way in me,
and lead me in the way everlasting.
Psalm 139 is a beautiful reminder, that no matter what, God is still in control. David reminds us of this through his Psalm, through which we can see his inner turmoil, but still know that he is holding fast to God, and God has never let him go.
