The finished product is perfect to give as a great baby shower gift, donate to your local hospital, or make for your own newborn to wear. You could also use this newborn size crocheted hat pattern for animal hats, or as a doll hat if you’re looking for a gift for a child.

These cute baby hats are perfect if you are a new crocheter because they’re a very simple hat pattern to follow. These little hats are so useful for newborn babies and are a surprise in the great help to help the baby stay at a comfortable temperature after they are born.

In the details of follow, I have provided a crochet hat pattern for a newborn crocheted hat, as well as a 0 to 3 months hat, and 3 to 6 months hat. This way you can make the same hat into different sizes if you desire a larger or smaller-sized hat.

Before we jump into the hat pattern, let’s first explore the types of yarn you can use.

Yarn

Making a crocheted baby hat is a great use for any scrap yarn you have laying about. I would recommend using a soft yarn so that it is nice and soft and will not scratch the baby’s head.

You can make different colors, and use different colored yarn or make different color combinations if you desire.

You do not need very much yarn for making a newborn hat, typically less than one skein depending on the size of your skein of yarn. Usually, if you can find baby soft yarn or a soft worsted weight yarn, this will work the best for your crocheted newborn hat.

Hook Size

The hook size you use may depend on which size of yarn you select. I recommend using a baby soft yarn, which is one that is quite fine. I recommend using a larger hook for this pattern and making your stitches rather snug. The hook size that I used for this pattern was a size H or 5.0 mm crochet hook.

It’s entirely up to your preference as to what size hook you use. Keep in mind the size hook you use, and the size of the yarn you use will determine the overall finished size of your project.

Basic Stitches

The basic stitches that this pattern uses are a chain stitch, a half double stitch, a single crochet stitch, and a double crochet stitch. Let’s look at each of the stitches explained.

Chain stitch. This is when you make a slipknot, then with the knot looped around your hook, yarn over and pull the new loop through the old upon your hook continue this process for the directed number of chain stitches.

Single crochet stitch. To make a single crochet stitch, insert your hook into the stitch indicated, yarn over, and pull up the loop, there are now two loops on the hook. Yarn over once more and pull through both loops on the hook.

Half double crochet stitch. To make a half-double crochet stitch, first yarn over, then insert your hook into the stitch indicated, yarn over, and pull up a loop. There are now three loops on the hook. Yarn over once more and pull through all three loops on the hook.

Double crochet stitch. To make a double crochet stitch, first yarn over, then insert the hook into the stitch indicated, yarn over, and pull up a loop. There are now three loops on your hook. Yarn over and pull through the first two loops on your hook. There are two loops on the hook. Yarn over one last time and pull through the remaining two loops on your hook.

Create the band on the bottom of the crochet baby hat, using methods one or two outlined below.

Band

There are two different methods you can use to make this band. The first method is to make it separately, then sew it onto the bottom of the hat. The other way is to create it attached to the hat. My preference is option two, but you can do it however you prefer. They both work and look the same when complete.

Band Method 1

Ch 5, in the 2nd ch from the hook make a sc, sc in the remaining 3 chain spaces. Ch 1, turn.

Working in the BLO sc in each of the 4 sts across. Ch 1, turn. Repeat from * to * until your band is long enough to fit the base of the hat.

Finish off and leave a long string for sewing. Thread the long string with yarn, and sew the band to the base of the hat.

Band Method 2

With your yarn still attached to the base of your hat, ch 5, in the 2nd ch from your hook make a sc, sc in the last 3 ch spaces. Slip stitch in the base of the hat, and in the next stitch up on the base of the hat, working in BLO sc in each of the 4 sts across, ch 1, turn.

Sc in each of the 4 spaces, then join to the base of the hat with a sl st. sl st in the next stitch up, then sc in each of the 4 sc spaces. Continue this process, until you work your way all the way around the base of the hat.

As you work, be careful that you are not adding stitches, the band should lay flat as you work, and not flair out, or pull in.

Pom Pom

To make a pom-pom for the top of the hat, first find a large fork, like a serving fork. Wrap the yarn around this fork until you have a thick section of yarn wrapping it. Tie a knot the opposite way, to hold the yarn together, being sure to leave a long tail for sewing.

Cut the ends of the yarn at each side so that they are evenly cut. Fluff the yarn to form a ball, then sew the long tails to the top of the hat, and tie in that securely. Weave in any ends.

Newborn Baby Bear Hat

One of the popular ways to finish off a newborn crochet hat, is to add bear ears to each side of the hat. You can do this by creating two pom-poms and attaching them to each side of the hat like ears, or you can crochet baby bear ears and then sew them to the hat. Follow this pattern below to make crochet ears.

Round 1: ch 2, in the 2nd ch from the hook, make 8 sc sts. Join with a sl st.

Round 2: ch 1, make 2 sc in each st around. Join to the first st with a sl st.

Round 3-6: ch 1, sc in each st around. Join with a sl st to the first sc st.

*make 2 ears

Once created, press the ears flat, then sew each ear, on opposite sides of the hat so that they are evenly spaced.
