Quick Crochet Project

Before we jump into the detailed instructions for this pattern, let’s first look at what type of yarn you should use, the crochet hook size, and some of the basic stitches used in these patterns to make crocheted coasters.

The Type of Yarn

One of the great things about learning how to make a crocheted coaster is that you don’t have to go out and buy specific yarn. In fact, you can use some scrap yarn from your yarn to stash for this project if desired. The best type of yarn to use is a 100% cotton blend, it’s best not to use acrylic yarn for this project. 100% cotton, which is the same type that you want to use for potholders, wash clause, or dish towels, and you might have some leftovers if you have made any of these projects before.

You can often find 100% cotton yarn in worsted weight yarn. This is the most common type of yarn to use. It’s gotten yarn and comes in many different colors. You can choose to use the same colors of yarn for all of your crocheted coasters, or you can make multi- colorful crochet coasters using a vera-gated skein of yarn or make each coaster different colors. It’s entirely up to your preference as to what colors you use.

Tip: Lion Brand Yarn has some great 24/7 cotton yarns that work great for this project, and Hobby Lobby also has something very similar in their stores, that is their store brand and is also 100% cotton.

Crochet Hook Size

When you make the simple coasters, using 100% cotton yarn, you will likely want to use a larger crochet hook. Please reference the packaging on the skein of yarn, just seeing what the manufacturer recommends as far as the appropriate crochet hook size. Usually, you will want to use an H, or I hook size, which is a 5.0mm or 5.0mm hook.

Now, let’s turn our attention to the basic stitches used to make these beautiful, crocheted coasters.

Simple Crochet Coasters

There are just a few basic crochet stitches that you will need to know in order to make these crochet coasters. The basic stitch used in this pattern are chain stitch, slip stitch, single crochet stitch, and double crochet stitch. For the circle coaster, it might be beneficial to know how to make a magic ring, or you can simply make it your first round of stitches in the first chain space or slipknot.

How to make a Magic Ring

Make a magic ring, you’ll first take the end of the yarn, and wrap it around your hand. Hold out three fingers and loop it from the front around to the back in so that it reaches the front again. Hold the part where it intersects between your thumb and fingers, then turn your hand over so that there are two strands of yarn together.

Take your hook and insert the hook underneath the first strand and catch the second strand. Put the second strand through the first strand and create a type of slipknot. Tighten the knot, but leave a large circle for you to work in. After all of your stitches are made in the circle you can then take the end of the yarn and pull it tight so that the circle becomes nice and tight around your stitches.

Chain Stitch

To make a change stitch, your first begin by making a slipknot and inserting the book into the loop. Wrap the yarn around from the back of the hook over the top towards the front. This is called a yarn over. Pull the new loop through the previous loop on the hook this is one chain. Repeat this process until you have made as many chain stitches as your pattern instructs.

Single Crochet Stitches

To make a single crochet stitch, you’ll first need to make the base by making a chain, or magic loop. Then to make your single crochet stitch, insert the hook into the stitch indicated, yarn over by wrapping the arm from the back of the hook towards the front, then pull up a loop. There are now two loops on your hook. Yarn over once more and pull the new loop to the previous two loops on the hook to make a single crochet stitch.

Half Double Crochet Stitches

A half double crochet stitch falls in between a single and a double crochet stitch. To make a half-double crochet stitch, first yarn over, then insert the hook into the next stitch indicated. Yarn over, and pull up a loop. There are now three loops on the hook. Yarn over and pull through all three loops to make a half-double crochet stitch.

Double Crochet Stitches

A double crochet stitch is similar to a single, but it is about double the size of a single. To make a double crochet stitch, begin first by earning over, then insert the hook into the stitch indicated, yarn over, and pull up the loop. There are no three loops on the hook. Yarn over once more and pull through the first two loops on the hook, yarn over again, and pull through the remaining two loops on the hook. You have now made a double crochet stitch.

Treble Crochet Stitch

A treble crochet stitch is even taller than a double crochet stitch. To make this stitch, you will want first to yarn over twice, then insert the hook into the next stitch indicated. Yarn over and pull up a loop. Yarn over and pull through the first two loops, yarn over and pull through the next two loops, then yarn over and pull through the remaining two loops to make a treble crochet stitch.

Increase Stitch

To make an increase stitch, you will simply make two stitches in one stitch from the previous round. This increases the number of stitches in that round and is perfect for making flat round objects such as round crochet coasters.

How to Slip Stitch

To make a slip stitch, you will simply insert the hook into the next stitch indicated, yarn over and pull the hoop up, and threw all the stitches on your hook. This makes a slip stitch.

Now let’s turn to the simple pattern, which is great for beginner crocheters, and for those of you that have been crocheting for many years. I am so excited to share this great project with you so that you can learn how to make a crochet coaster.

Tip: If you want, you can make these round coasters using a double crochet stitch instead of a single crochet stitch. The double crochet tends to go much faster than a single crochet stitch does. Mug Rug Fringe

If desired, you can make a fringe on your square to transform it into s mug rug. To do this, cut a piece of yarn, or two so that they are approximately 3 inches long. Fold them in half. Insert the hook into the side of the square coaster and pull the center of the folded strands of yarn through. Then pull the loose ends through the loop you just pulled through and pull them tight so that they form a knot.
