Star Stitch Pattern
To make these cute crochet stars, you will need to know a few basic stitches. There are a variety of stitches combined together to make the star points which also make the stars look so cute. In this step-by-step tutorial, we are going to walk through the different stitches, and how they come together to make these cute stars.
Simple Crochet Star Pattern
Basic Crochet Stitches
ch – chain
sl st – slip stitch
mr – magic ring (magic circle)
sc – single crochet
hdc – half double crochet stitches
dc – double crochet
tr – treble crochet
st/sts – stitch/stitches

Materials Needed:
Yarn
4.5 mm crochet hook
Free Crochet Star Pattern
Round 1: ch 3 sts, in the 3rd st from the hook, make 2 dc cluster. Ch 3 sts, make 3 dc cluster. Repeat from * to * 4 times, until you have a total of 5 cluster sections. ch 2, join with a sc to the top of the first cluster made.
Round 2: ch 3, hdc in same st, ch 1. *In the next ch 3 space, make hdc, dc, tr, ch 3, tr, dc, hdc. Ch 1 st.* Repeat from * to * around. Join with a sl st to the top of the first hdc st made.
Round 3: sl st in the top of the hdc, and in the ch 1 space made. ch 1, sc in the same st. in the next ch 3 space, make hdc, 2 dc, tr, ch 2, tr, 2 dc, hdc. Sc in the next ch 1 space. Repeat from * to * around. Join with a slip stitch to the first st made. Finish off and weave in the ends of the yarn.
Make a Hanging Loop
If desired you can make a hanging loop at the point of the star. I used a piece of hemp, looped through the chain space at the tip. You might also like to use a piece of ribbon or chain a loop to hold the star.
How to Make a 2 DC Cluster
Yarn over, and insert the hook into the loop. Yarn over and pull up a loop. There are now three loops on your hook. Yarn over again and pull through the first two loops on the hook. There are two loops on the hook.
Once more, yarn over, and insert your hook into the loop. Yarn over again, and pull up a loop. There are four loops on the hook. Yarn over again and pull through the first two loops on the hook.
You now have two partial double crochet stitches made. Yarn over again and pull the new loop through the stitches left on the hook.
How to Make a 3 DC Cluster
Yarn over, and insert the hook into the loop. Yarn over and pull up a loop. There are now three loops on your hook. Yarn over again and pull through the first two loops on the hook. There are two loops on the hook.
You are going to repeat these same steps again. Yarn over, and insert the hook into the loop again. Yarn over and pull up a loop. There are now four loops on your hook. Yarn over again and pull through the first two loops on the hook. There are three loops on the hook.
One last time, yarn over, and insert the hook into the loop again. Yarn over and pull up a loop. There are now five loops on your hook. Yarn over again and pull through the first two loops on the hook. There are four loops on the hook.
You now have three partial double crochet stitches made. Yarn over again and pull the new loop through the stitches left on the hook.
Crochet Star Tips and Tricks
The Yarn
Feel free to make your crochet stars from different colors of yarn. This way you can make the stars any color combinations that you prefer.
As far as the type of yarn that should be used, cotton yarns and acrylic yarn are the most common types to use for making this crochet star pattern. Feel free to use whatever type of yarn you like the best or any scrap yarn you might have sitting around. The yarn weight also isn’t very important. Simply choose whatever yarn you like to work with the best.
Should you use a slip knot to start the star?
If you prefer to use a slip knot and chain two stitches, rather than making a magic ring, then by all means feel free! The slip knot has a similar function as the magic ring, it’s just slightly different.
Crochet Hook Sizes
Feel free to use whatever crochet hook size you prefer. If you are using thin yarn, then you will want to use a smaller hook to make your crochet stars. On the other hand, if you are using thick yarn, then you might need to use a larger hook. Ultimately it comes down to what you are most comfortable with, and the tightness of your stitches.
