If you are or know a bunny lover, they will fall in love with these adorable floppy ears the first time they lay eyes on these adorable little guys. These little bunnies are the perfect pattern to make as Easter gifts, they are cute bunnies, and what better time of year to give a bunny than as a great Easter gift.
Not only are these little guys great for the Easter Holiday, but they are an adorable crochet project for any time of the year. I’m not sure that anyone whether old or young can resist this adorable floppy-eared best friend.
Sweet Little Bunnies: Free Crochet Pattern
I absolutely love making these sweet little bunnies, and I hope you will too. It is just one of the cutest animal patterns and makes a dear friend or one of the perfect toys for the little people in your life.
Huggable Floppy Ear Bunny
This free pattern will walk you through each step to make your own cute bunny, to be your new best friend. This bunny rabbit is also a great gift for new little babies, although you may want to consider an alternative to the safety eyes.
Now, before we jump into the crochet bunny pattern, I would like to walk you through the different yarn options as well as which crochet hook might work the best for you. Then we will jump into the pattern for this adorable crochet bunny!
Yarn
There are so many different varieties of yarn to choose from, from worsted weight yarn, to velvet yarn, then choosing from all of the different colors available or color combination options. Where do you start?
First, I would like to point out that the type of yarn you decide to use will determine the finished size of your bunny. If you use a baby yarn, or even a worsted weight yarn, you will end up with a little bunny as your finished project.
The same is true if you choose a thick or bulky yarn, the finished size of your bunny will end up being a large bunny.
My personal favorite yarn to use when making this crochet bunny pattern is to use velvet yarn. Now, keep in mind, there are different weights of velvet yarn as well. I tend to go with a thicker velvet yarn so that my finished bunny isn’t super tiny. To make this pattern, I usually use velvet yarn with a yarn weight of five. I specifically chose pink yarn.
Crochet Hook
The hook size that you choose will also determine the different sized stuffed animals that you make. The only issue is that you will want to keep in mind the type of yarn you are using because the kind of yarn and the crochet hook size are very much linked together.
You will also want to determine if you tend to crochet loose or if your stitches are generally tight. These factors will also play a part in what size hook you use because you don’t want the bunny to have a lot of holes in it as you make it.
With a yarn weight of five, I usually use a crochet hook size 7, which is around a 4.50 mm crochet hook. You may want to increase or decrease the size of your hook depending on your yarn type and how tight you tend to make your stitches.
Crochet Rabbit Pattern
Materials
Yarn (I used 1 8 oz 100% Polyester yarn for the large bunny and 2 3.5 oz skeins of velvet for the small bunny, both from Hobby Lobby)
4.5 mm hook
Stitch marker (optional)
Yarn needle
Sewing needle and colored thread
Finished Size: Large bunny 12 inches, Small bunny 9 inches
Abbreviations
mr- Magic circle (magic ring)
sl st – slip stitch
ch – chain stitch
sc – single crochet stitches
dc – double crochet
FLO – front loops only
BLO – back loops only
inv dec – invisible decrease
inc – increasest/sts – stitch/stitches
Basic Stitches
The basic stitches included in this pattern that you will need to know are a chain, a slip stitch, a single crochet, an increase, and a decrease. Most likely you are aware of how to make a chain, slip stitch, and single crochet stitch, but you may not know how to make an increase stitch or an invisible decrease. Let’s explain these two stitches in detail, then if you need assistance with the rest, please let me know! I am happy to help.
Increase (inc). To make an increase stitch in this pattern, you will simply want to make two complete single crochet stitches in the same stitch. Doing this will add a stitch to increase the part of the bunny you are working on. Insert your hook in the stitch indicated, YO, and pull up a loop, YO, and pull through the two loops on your hook, this makes one single crochet stitch. Then back into the same stitch, insert your hook, YO, and pull up a loop, YO once more, and pull through the two loops on your hook, you have just made an inc stitch.
Invisible Decrease. An invisible decrease stitch is when you use two stitch spaces, and create one stitch in them, decreasing the total number of stitches in the round. To make this stitch, insert your hook into the first space indicated, but only go through the front loop of the stitch, YO and pull up a loop, there are two loops on the hook. Insert your hook into the front loop of the next stitch indicated, YO and pull up another loop. YO once more, there are now four loops on your hook. Pull the first loop through the other three loops on the hook, to finish out the invisible decrease stitch.
Cute Crochet Bunny Pattern: Free Pattern
Legs (Make 2)
Round 1: ch 2, make 6 sc in the 2nd ch from the hook, join with sl st to first st (6st)
Round 2: ch 1, inc in each st around, join with sl st to first st (12st)
Round 3: ch 1, (inc, 3 sc) repeat from ( to ) around, join with sl st to the first st (15st)
Round 4: ch 1, working in back loops only, sc in each st around, join with sl st (15st) Working only in the back loops will allow the front loops to create a little ridge around the feet. This step is optional.
Round 5– 9: ch 1, sc in each st around, join with sl st to the first st (15st)
*Stuff the leg as desired
Round 10: ch 1, (dec, 3 sc) repeat around, join with sl st to the first st (12st)
Round 11-12: ch 1, sc in each st around, join with sl st to the first st (12st)
Round 13: ch 1, (dec, 2 sc) repeat around, join with sl st to the first st (9st)
Round 14 -15: ch 1, sc in each st around, join with sl st. (9st)
Once the first leg is made, repeat these steps once more to make the second leg. Pull the yarn through the last stitch made and finish off. Leave a long tail for sewing.
Next, we will make the arms. This pattern is going to be repeated twice to make two arms.
Arms (Make 2)
Round 1: ch 2, sc in the 2nd chain from the hook. Into the first ch sp, make 6 sc, join with sl st. (6st)
Round 2: ch 1, inc in each st (6 times) around. Join with sl st to the first st (12st)
Round 3 – 9: ch 1, sc on each st around, join with sl st to the first st (12st)
Round 10: ch 1, (dec, sc) repeat around, join with a sl st to the first st (8st)
Round 11 – 12: ch 1, sc in each st around, join with sl st to the first st (8st)
Finish off and leave a yarn tail for sewing. Make two arms.
Body
Round 1: ch 2, into the first ch sp, make 8 sc, join with sl st to the first sc to form a circle (8st)
Round 2: ch 1, inc in each st around, join with sl st to the first st (16st)
Round 3: ch 1, (inc, sc) repeat from ( to ) around, join with sl st in the first st (24st)
Round 4: ch 1, (inc, sc in next 2 st) repeat from ( to ) around, join with sl st in the first st (32st)
In the next round, we are going to attach the legs. To do this, flatten the legs out, then crochet them into the round as you go. You can space them as desired. Below is our recommendation, but you can adjust the leg spacing to your preference.
Round 5: ch 1, sc in the next 2 sps, then use the next 4 sc sps to attach the first leg to the body. Sc in the next 12 spaces, sc in the next 4 sps to attach the second leg. Sc in the final 10 sts remaining. Join with a sl st to the first st (32st)
Round 6 – 10: ch 1, sc in each st around, join with sl st to the first st (32st)
Round 11: ch 1, (dec, sc in next 3 sps) repeat from ( to ) around, join with sl st (26st)
Round 12: ch 1, sc in each st around, join with sl st (26st)
Round 13: ch 1, (dec, sc in next 4 sps) repeat from ( to ) 4 times around, then work a sc in the last st, join with sl st (22st)
Round 14: ch 1, (dec, sc in next 4 sps) repeat from ( to ) around, then join with sl st to the first st (18st)
Like adding the legs, in the next round, we are going to crochet in the arms. Position the arms where you want them, and pin them in place, as you crochet around, stitch through the arms to secure them in place.
Round 15: ch 1, sc in each stitch around, stitching the arms in place as you crochet around. Join with sl st (18st)
Round 16: ch 1, sc in each stitch around, join with sl st (18st)
Finish off the body, but leave a long tail for sewing, if needed. Stuff the body completely. Once the body of your bunny is stuffed, set it aside and now it’s time to move on with creating its head.
Head
Round 1: ch 2, into the first ch sp, make 8 sc, join with sl st to the first sc to form a circle (8st)
Round 2: ch 1, inc in each st around, join with sl st to the first st (16st)
Round 3: ch 1, (inc, sc) repeat from ( to ) around, join with sl st in the first st (24st)
Round 4: ch 1, (inc, sc in next 2 st) repeat from ( to ) around, join with sl st in the first st (32st)
Round 5: ch 1, (inc, sc in next 3 st) repeat from ( to ) around, join with sl st in the first st (40st)
Round 6 – 10: ch 1, sc in each st around, join with sl st to first st (40st)
Round 11: ch 1, (dec, sc in next 3 st) repeat from ( to ) around, join with sl st in the first st (32st)
Round 12: ch 1, (dec, sc in next 2 st) repeat from ( to ) around, join with sl st in the first st (24st)
Round 13: ch 1, (dec, sc in next 1 st) repeat from ( to ) around, join with sl st in the first st (16st)
Insert safety eyes and stuff head as desired. Make sure that the eyes are in the correct position for your personal preference.
Round 14: ch 1, (dec) repeat from ( to ) around, join with sl st in the first st (8st)
Leave a long tail for sewing, then finish off. Tuck in the long tail at the top of the head.
Ears (Make 2)
Round 1: ch 2, in the first st, make 5 sc, join with sl st to form a circle. (5st)
Round 2: ch 1, inc in each st around, join with sl st to the first st (10st)
Round 3: ch 1, (inc, sc) repeat from ( to ) around, join with sl st in the first st (15st)
Round 4: ch 1, (inc, sc in next 2 st) repeat from ( to ) around, join with sl st in the first st (20st)
Round 5: ch 1, sc in each space around, join with sl st (20 st)
Round 6: ch 1, (inc, sc in next 3 st) repeat from ( to ) around, join with sl st in the first st (25st)
Round 7: ch 1, sc in each space around, join with sl st (25st)
Round 8: ch 1, (inc, sc in next 4 st) repeat from ( to ) around, join with sl st in the first st (30st)
Round 9: ch 1, sc in each space around, join with sl st (30st)
Round 10 – 13: ch 1, sc in each st around, join with sl st (35st)
Round 14: ch 1, (dec, sc in next 4 st) repeat from ( to ) around, join with sl st in the first st (30st)
Round 15: ch 1, (dec, sc in next 3 st) repeat from ( to ) around, join with sl st in the first st (25st)
Round 16: ch 1, (dec, sc in next 2 st) repeat from ( to ) around, join with sl st in the first st (20st)
Round 17-18: ch 1, sc in each stitch around.
Round 19: ch 1, dec, sc in next 6 sts, dec, sc in remaining 6sts. Join with sl st.
Round 20: ch 1, sc in each st around
Round 21: ch 1 dec, sc in next 5, dec, 5 sc, join with sl st.
Round 22: ch 1, sc in each st around
Round 23: ch 1, dec, 2 sc, dec, dec, 2 sc, dec, join with sl st
Round 24: ch 1, sc through both sides in each stitch. Finish off
Flatten each ear, then sew them to the top of each side of the bunny’s head. When the ears are attached to the head, sew the head to the top of the body using a yarn needle and the long tail of thread that was left. Make sure to sew it securely so that it can withstand children’s play.
The last item to make is the bunny’s tail. Follow the instructions below to make the cute little tail.
Tail
Round 1: ch 2, in the 2nd chain from the hook, make 6 sc, join the sc with a sl st to form a circle (6st)
Round 2: ch 1, (inc, sc) in each stitch around (9st)
Round 3: ch 1, (dec, sc) in each st around (6st)
Sew the tail to the butt of your bunny. Use a sewing needle and thread to add a face to your bunny. Feel free to sew on a nose, mouth, eyelashes, and even eyebrows if you want! Feel free to add as much detail as you want to your cute little bunny.
When you are done, finish off, then tuck in any remaining loose ends, or yarn tails that might be left. Now your adorable little bunny is finished and ready to go!
