Simple Dishcloth

In this free pattern that I am so excited to share with you today, you can make this dishcloth pattern with basic crochet knowledge. I have come up with a few simple stitch combinations to make this an easy project.

If you are just starting to learn how to crochet, this is a great first project, because it uses only basic crochet stitches. Plus, this project doesn’t use much yarn, so it is a great place to start!

The Best Yarn For This Washcloth

There’s one thing I would like to point out before we get started with the pattern. It is very important that the correct type of yarn is used for making items like washcloths, dishcloths, and potholders.

For each of these projects, you are going to want to purchase any 100% cotton yarn, but it’s really important that you use cotton yarn, so that it handles heat okay.

One of the most popular brands of cotton yarn you can use is Sugar n Cream yarn, but there are also other brands available. In order to make one dishcloth with this pattern, you are going to want to find a skein of cotton yarn that is at least 2oz or larger.

Now, let’s get started with this free pattern!

Crochet Stitches for a Washcloth

Chain: A chain is made first by making a slip knot on your hook, then yarn over, and pull the new loop through the old loop. Each of these loops counts as a chain space.

Slip Stitch: A slip stitch is made by inserting the hook into the stitch indicated, yarn over, and then pull the new loop through the space and any loops on the hook. A slip stitch is sort of like an invisible stitch because it does not count as a stitch space.

Single Crochet

Single Crochet Stitches: A single crochet stitch is made by inserting the hook into the space indicated, yarn over and pull up a loop, yarn over again, and pull through the two loops on your hook.

Half Double Crochet

Half Double Crochet: A half double crochet is made by yarning over, then insert your hook into the stitch indicated, and pull up a loop. There are now three loops on your hook. Yarn over once more and pull the new yarn through all three of the loops on your hook.

Double Crochet

Double Crochet: A double crochet stitch is made by yarning over, and then insert your hook into the indicated stitch. Yarn over and pull up a loop, there are now three loops on your hook. Yarn over and pull the new yarn through the first two loops on your hook. Yarn over once more and pull the new yarn through the last two loops remaining on your hook.

Different Sizes

This dishcloth pattern can be made into different sizes by adding or subtracting chains to the first row made. You can also use larger or smaller hooks to change the finished size of this pattern as well.

For this pattern, I recommend that you use a US size 7 crochet hook or a 4.5 mm crochet hook, for cotton yarn. However, you can feel free to change this up, if you would like, especially if you know you tend to crochet tighter or looser than average.
